Here’s a softie pattern freebie that I posted up on my own blog a few months ago. Oh-Oh the Owl cushion/softie is very easy to put together and if you are making this for a baby, you could substitute the button eyes with felt, and the felt feathers on the front with looped ribbons or crinkly cellophane encased in fabric.

Timothy of Fantastic Toys recently emailed with a link to his tutorial for super cute felt softie Christmas ornaments:

How gorgeous would these look in different colour combinations, not just on the tree but hung on ribbon/string like a garland on the walls, across doorways, down staircase rails too?
These ornaments can be hand-sewn, machine-sewn and kids will have a great time gluing on the little embellishments.

Rice Babies provides a great tip on how to use animal silhouettes to make forest-themed stuffies/softies from felt. She used these as giveaways for her child’s birthday party:

Thank you to Linda for letting me know about some easy to make softies on her website, Pane Amore Creativita.
She has provided tutorials on how to make a felt cube softie, a felt bear softie, and felt finger puppets:

The tutorials are in Italian but you can transalate them into English using one of the translation buttons on her website. Also, these projects are quite easy to follow without the transalation and can be purely hand-sewn.

There is no doubt that babies love to squeeze and cuddle things that will make a noise in response (and yes, some grown-ups like this too!). Susan Beal from CraftStylish shows you how you can turn a few empty plastic wrappers, felt, and thread in to a crinkly toy for your little bub (or um, grown-up friend):

This is really easy to put together and I like the fact there is a little bit of recycling thrown in as well
You could insert add a bell or squeaker instead of the plastic wrapper. And if you are not in to owls, then you could pretty much draw up whatever you wanted and turn that into a crinkly toy!

I have been long-time admirer of Mim Kirchner’s dolls. Texture, detail, colour and character - each one is amazing in their own way. They are inspiring and endearing. See for yourself over here on her blog.
So I was stoked to find out that she has generously shared a free pattern and tutorial for one of her felt dolls (with dress) over at the Purl Bee:

Yes, you can make one these dolls yourself! The dolls are completely handsewn. In usual Purl Bee style, the instructions and pictures are clear and easy to follow. The project is suitable for those with basic sewing skills and up.

How sweet are these Toadstool Cottage and Mushroom House Pincushions?

{image credit: The Little House by the Sea}
I think they would look so gorgeous lined up on a dresser in different sizes and with different embroidered details. Or how about making them in to ornaments? Give-aways? How about enlarging the pattern and making a toadstool 1 or 2 feet tall for your child’s bedroom?
So versatile and sure to add a little bit of whimsy into your home!

Ever wondered how to make a Steiner doll (also known as a Waldorf Doll)? Yes? Then you really must drop in on Sooz’s fantastic free tutorial!

{image credit: Sooz}
The project requires the basic softie making materials plus very good quality felt and interlock (t-shirt material) in a flesh colour (or a white t-shirt dyed with tea). Sooz provides a sample template but really, you could create your own templates freehand as the shape of these dolls is quite simple and unfussy. The steps and accompanying pictures provide excellent detail and Sooz also guides you through how attach hair.
If you’re looking for more Steiner doll inspiration, visit the Steiner Dolls Flickr Group spawned by Sooz’s pattern.
